Department of Conservation

DOC is responsible for conserving the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand. Since the land around Mt Taranaki was first formally protected in 1881 various government departments have been in charge of its protection, with DOC taking on responsibility for the national park’s welfare in 1987.

NEXT Foundation

The NEXT Foundation is a philanthropic trust with the vision “to create a legacy of environmental and educational excellence for the benefit of future generations of New Zealanders”.

Taranaki Mounga follows on from the success of other NEXT Foundation related investments, such as creating a conservation park out of Rotoroa Island and Project Janszoon, a privately funded 30 year ecological restoration of Abel Tasman National Park. Taranaki Mounga make use of the technologies developed by Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP), which is funded by a collaboration of partners including NEXT, such as novel traps and automated monitoring.

In 2018 Te Manahuna Aoraki was launched and is a large-scale conservation project focused on restoring the biodiversity of the upper Mackenzie Basin and Aoraki National Park. NEXT Foundation are also partners of Predator Free Wellington which aims to make Wellington the first predator free capital city in the world.

Together Toi Foundation continues to increase access to opportunities, have a thriving environment, prioritise child and youth wellbeing and empower Māori aspiration.

Toi Foundation was established in 1988 as the sole shareholder of TSB Bank Ltd. Today the Trust owns TSB Group Ltd, a holding company that manages the Trust’s asset investments, which include 100% of TSB Bank Ltd and a controlling interest in Fisher Funds Management.
