Tama Blackburn (Ngāti Maniapoto) has been is part of our team for five years. In 2021 he moved into his new role as Te Hau Tupua/Science and Innovation Lead.
He enjoys using his knowledge of predator control, flora, fauna and rongoa to find new ways and means to remove the harmful things in Te Papakura o Taranaki and measure the successful bounce back of our native species. This while using a combination of modern science and mātauranga Māori.
He also enjoys mentoring new members of the team and guiding their pathways of learning, which Tama is also on, currently studying towards his Masters in Māori and Indigenous Leadership at the University of Canterbury.
His commitment to the environment extends outside of Te Papakura o Taranaki where he established Waitara Taiao and regularly volunteers for conservation programmes across the region.
Tama’s wife and children are of Ngāti Mutunga, Te Atiawa and Rangitane descent, so the restoration of our tupuna mounga holds a very special place in his heart.
