As a relative newcomer to Taranaki Gareth says he is in awe of the Mounga and how it connects the people of Taranaki, giving them a unique identity.
Born in South Africa, he has lived and worked in wildlife parks in some of the most stunning areas of South Africa. His career includes over 25 years of planning, management and practical experience in wildlife management, ecotourism and large-scale restoration. After moving to New Zealand he has led large threatened species and pest control projects for the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Westland and Taranaki.
Gareth says Taranaki Mounga is a transformational change for conservation in Taranaki. He is excited that this collaborative approach to conservation on such a large scale is now being replicated throughout New Zealand.
As DOC’s Operations Manager, Gareth manages all operational aspects of DOC’s work in Taranaki, including in the National Park. Gareth has scientific training and holds a B.Sc Honours in zoology and botany.
